Shane Van Gisbergen added another chapter to his incredible debut NASCAR Cup Series campaign, scoring a thrilling win at the Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The New Zealander once again showcased his road course prowess, dominating the early laps and surviving a chaotic finish to take the checkered flag in dramatic fashion.

“An amazing day. The car was just unbelievable,” said Van Gisbergen. “I think we did a pretty good job of making some tweaks from [Saturday]. In the start of that third stage, Kyle [Larson] and Christopher [Bell] were really good. I lost control of the lead and lost control of the race. I couldn’t match them, really. They were a bit better than me. Whatever we did that last stop was great. From there, we were just magic.”

He set the pace right from the start, edging out a tight battle to claim the Stage 1 victory.

Ross Chastain was also in the mix early, securing a fifth-place finish in the stage to boost his playoff chances. But Chastain’s momentum didn’t last long.

A misstep on pit road dropped Chastain to 30th, undoing his early gains. Things only got worse from there.

On lap 31, chaos unfolded when Carson Hocevar made contact with Austin Cindric, sending him spinning through the frontstretch chicane. The incident left Cindric with a broken toe link, ending his race and his playoff hopes.

Strategy shuffled the field as pit stops cycled through, and Ryan Blaney seized the opportunity to grab the Stage 2 win.

Meanwhile, Chastain’s rough day continued when he was flagged for speeding on pit exit with just over 10 laps to go, resulting in a costly pass-through penalty.

“I had to be in front of [Hamlin to advance in the Round of 8], so, I did what I had to do to be in front of the 11,” said Ross Chastain. “I am sorry to them, I’m sorry to Denny, I’m sorry to JGR and their whole team. I singlehandedly took a car out of the Round of 8 – we were good enough to be in the top five, and I took us out of that. That’s the only reason we aren’t in the Round of 8. It’s all on me.”

In the final run to the finish, Van Gisbergen and Kyle Larson staged a thrilling duel for the lead, trading positions and bodywork before Van Gisbergen finally pulled away for the win.

“[Van Gisbergen] was just way better than all of us,” said Kyle Larson. “I was trying to fight and maybe press him into a mistake. He kind of ran into me [during Stage 3 in a battle for the lead], so I was like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna run into you a few times here,’ but it was inevitable that he was going to pass me. I’m happy with second. It was a great day. I thought we were definitely second-best all race long. The team and pit crew were awesome.”

But the most dramatic moment came in the last corner of the last lap.

With Denny Hamlin overtaking Chastain to hand Joey Logano the final transfer spot to the Round of 8, Chastain made a desperate lunge in the final turn, slamming into Hamlin and spinning both cars.

Logano slipped through the wreckage, advancing, while Chastain’s high-risk move came up short.

“I didn’t want any part of it,” said Denny Hamlin. “I wish I would have known what the last-lap scenario was and [I would] make the best decision for me. No one told me anything – I didn’t know if I was racing for 25th or 10th – I had no idea of my position.”

“There was a bit of a race the last 10 laps, trying to see what was going on the big screen,” Van Gisbergen added. “I was hoping a caution wouldn’t come out. I was trying to watch the race.”

As the dust settled, Van Gisbergen stood tall with his first ROVAL triumph, cementing his place as one of the sport’s most elite road course drivers.

“This is the winningest season in the history of the company, and a lot of that has to do with this incredible team – it’s not just Shane [Van Gisbergen], it’s everyone,” said team owner Justin Marks.

Christopher Bell, who finished third, summed up the challenge many faced trying to keep up with Van Gisbergen.

“More of the same on the road courses, just getting our teeth kicked in by Shane [Van Gisbergen],” said Bell. “I struggled going loose. I think all of us were the same way, we just all go loose and he doesn’t. We saw earlier in the race – the start of Stage 3 – we could keep up with him, but he just blitzes us on the backside.”

The playoff field was cut to eight, with Chastain, Cindric, Bubba Wallace, and Tyler Reddick all eliminated. Denny Hamlin heads into the next round as the top seed, setting up a high-stakes sprint to the championship finale.
